I’ve been trying to get back in shape by training for a 5K. It’s no piece of cake. When your idea of exercise has long consisted of an occasional one-mile jog or a bimonthly hike, running for thirty minutes will come pretty close to killing you the first time you try.
While I’d love to turn the whole thing into a game à la Russ Pitts’s brilliant “Master Chief in Sneakers: Making Life Not Suck,” I’m simply not ready to trust that the Nike+iPod’s RPG-like system will help my body level up. In short, it’s an expensive product and I don’t tend to get into role-playing games all that much.
Next best thing? Listening to Video Games Live: Greatest Hits — Volume 1 on my iPod Shuffle. The “Halo Suite” pushes me into overdrive every time.

By the way, if you like the idea of turning banal activities into games, check out this great Clive Thompson article. Or, go play Chore Wars. Have fun!
